Why Indoor Greens Practice Matters

Indoor greens practice isn’t a gimmick. It’s a repeatable, reliable way to hit perfect strokes on a consistent surface. You can focus on subtle changes without wind, slopes or speed variations messing with your head.

At Zen Golf Studio, our Zen Green Stage simulates real course slopes. We back it up with 3D motion capture and advanced swing analysis. You’ll see your setup, stroke path and tempo on screen. No guesswork. Just data-driven feedback that works.

10 Tour-Proven Tips for Alignment and Speed Control

1. Square-on Setup for Reliable Aim

Start by aligning your feet, hips and shoulders square to the target line. At Zen Golf Studio’s indoor greens practice lanes you can lay down alignment rods or use our laser guides. A square body is half the battle won.

  • Feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Ball just ahead of centre.
  • Eyes over the ball.

A simple mirror or camera from our 3D motion capture rig will confirm your lines every time.

2. Gate Drill for Stroke Path

Place two tees just narrower than your putter head and stroke putts through the “gate.” This drill forces a straight-back, straight-through path. It’s a favourite on any indoor greens practice surface and helps ingrain muscle memory.

Feel the putter head brush past the tees without touching. That subtle feedback lets you fine-tune your arc in a flash.

3. Chalk Line for Face Angle Consistency

Draw a chalk line on the green or use tape on your practise mat. Aim your putter face exactly square to this line. Drill 20 putts without deviating more than half an inch. On our indoor greens practice you’ll notice even tiny twists in your hands.

A level face gives you truer rolls and fewer skidders.

4. Distance Control with Ladder Drill

Set up tees at 3ft, 6ft and 9ft. Try to land balls exactly at each tee, not beyond. This ladder drill builds a feel for speed under pressure. It’s also fun to tally your makes vs. taps. Use the same drill on our indoor greens practice at varying slopes for an extra challenge.

5. Swing Weight Awareness

Pinch the grip end lightly and swing the putter head back and through. This helps you feel the pendulum motion. On a smooth indoor green you’ll pick up on tempo faults instantly. It’s a simple drill but hugely effective for consistent pace.

I recommend 3 sets of 15 reps, resting between each.

6. Backstroke Length Control

Count “one-two” in your head as you swing back, and “one-two” on the forward stroke. Keep the counts equal. This drill on our indoor greens practice mats trains your rhythm. When you stick to that tempo on the course, you’ll drain more long ones.

7. Varied Slope Simulations

Use adjustable slope boards on our Zen Green Stage to replicate uphill, downhill and sidehill putts. Practise the same drill at each angle. You’ll learn instantly how much to open or close your stance and face.

8. Two-Ball Drill for Alignment Check

Place a second ball just outside your putter path as a guide. If your stroke strays, you’ll hit the passive ball. This immediate feedback is gold on indoor greens practice. You get a clear indicator of path flaws.

9. Tournament Pressure Practice

Set up a mini-competition with friends or a coach. Use our bookable group sessions to add stakes. Score your putts, add penalty strokes for misses. It’s amazing how pressure brings out flaws you never knew were there.

10. Video Playback Reviews

Record your stroke with our 3D motion capture camera. Watch the angle of attack, head position and follow-through. It’s the same tech used on the DP World Tour. Reviewing slo-mo clips makes tiny tweaks obvious.
